Background of the Study

Cancer patients often experience significant psychological challenges, including depression, anxiety, and fear of the unknown. Social support plays a critical role in mitigating these challenges and enhancing patients' mental well-being (Murray et al., 2023). Peer support groups, which involve patients sharing their experiences and providing emotional support to one another, have been shown to be effective in improving mental health outcomes for cancer patients (Hamilton et al., 2023). Oncology nurses facilitate these support groups, helping to create a safe, empathetic environment where patients can connect with others undergoing similar experiences.

At Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Kaduna State, oncology nurses facilitate peer support groups for cancer patients, aiming to improve mental well-being, reduce feelings of isolation, and provide an avenue for patients to discuss their experiences and coping strategies (Brown & Adams, 2024). This study aims to explore the effect of peer support groups facilitated by oncology nurses on patients' mental well-being, with a focus on understanding the psychological benefits and challenges involved.

Statement of the Problem

Cancer patients often struggle with mental health issues such as anxiety and depression, which can affect their ability to cope with their diagnosis and treatment. While peer support groups are a promising intervention, their effectiveness in improving mental well-being through oncology nurse facilitation needs further evaluation. This study will assess the impact of peer support groups on the mental well-being of cancer patients at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the impact of peer support groups facilitated by oncology nurses on patients’ mental well-being.

2. To assess the role of peer support in reducing anxiety and depression among cancer patients.

3. To identify the challenges faced by oncology nurses in facilitating effective peer support groups.

Research Questions

1. What is the impact of peer support groups on the mental well-being of cancer patients at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital?

2. How do peer support groups help reduce anxiety and depression in cancer patients?

3. What challenges do oncology nurses face in facilitating peer support groups for cancer patients?

Research Hypotheses

1. Peer support groups facilitated by oncology nurses significantly improve cancer patients' mental well-being.

2. There is a significant relationship between participation in peer support groups and reduced anxiety and depression among cancer patients.

3. Oncology nurses face significant challenges in facilitating effective peer support groups for cancer patients.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the role of oncology nurses in facilitating peer support groups for cancer patients at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital. Limitations include the variability in patients' mental health status before participation, potential biases in self-reporting, and challenges in measuring subjective improvements in mental well-being.
